Savannah Guthrie ‘Quietly Made It Known’ She Wants More Anchors Filling In on ‘Today’ Besides Hoda Kotb
- Savannah Guthrie is reportedly seeking multiple replacements for when she is absent from Today, wanting a deeper bench of anchors alongside Craig Melvin.
Savannah Guthrie reportedly wants more than one replacement for when she's absent from Today, according to the Wednesday, July 15 edition of Rob Shuter's Naughty But Nice Substack.
The TV personality, 54, took off a few days from Today last week, and instead of Hoda Kotb — who left the morning program in January 2025 — filling in for her, Sheinelle Jones and Laura Jarrett co-anchored alongside Craig Melvin.
"Savannah has quietly made it known she wants a deeper bench," one insider told Shuter. "Hoda left on her own terms, and everyone respects that. But the show isn't looking backward. Savannah wants viewers to become just as comfortable with Sheinelle, Laura, and other anchors alongside Craig."
"Hoda chose to leave, and the show has to move forward," a second source explained. "There's enormous respect for everything she accomplished, but nobody is trying to recreate the past. The focus now is building what's next."
A third source noted that Savannah and Kotb, 61, "were always consummate professionals" rather than "best friends."
"People mistook great television for a deep personal relationship," the source continued. "They have very different styles, and everyone at the show knew that."
"Savannah wants viewers focused on the future, not Hoda," the third source added. "Hoda had an extraordinary connection with the audience, but this is about building the next generation of Today."
In February, Savannah took about a two-month leave from her job at NBC to search for her 84-year-old mother, Nancy Guthrie, who disappeared from her Arizona home on February 1, and in that time Kotb filled in for her.
While the search for Nancy continues, Savannah eventually made an emotional return to Today on Monday, April 6.
