Overview

The Nissan Xterra was a pillar of the go-anywhere crossover segment prior to its discontinuation after the 2015 model year. With the number of SUVs that sport a modicum of off-road capability exploding in popularity in recent years, Nissan has finally decided to capitalize on the craze by bringing back the familiar nameplate.

There's still a lot that we don’t know about the new Xterra, but it looks to pick up where the last model left off, sporting a rugged body-on-frame chassis, four-wheel drive, and enough trail-running capability to square up against models such as the Ford Bronco and Toyota 4Runner. Nissan has also said that the new Xterra will be powered by a V-6 engine and offer an optional hybrid powertrain, a first for the model.

Expert Tip: The new Xterra won't hit the market until late 2028, likely as a 2029 model. That's a long time to wait, but we expect a Mitsubishi variant, likely wearing the Montero nameplate, may beat the Xterra to market as a 2028 model.

What's New for 2029?

While its name is a blast from the past, the upcoming Xterra will be an all-new edition to the Nissan fleet for 2029. It will be one of a slew of new products that are designed to help Nissan recover from a period of financial hardship and will likely share its underlying body-on-frame platform with either the next-generation Frontier pickup or Pathfinder SUV.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

All we know so far is that the 2029 Xterra will feature a V-6 engine and will eventually be offered with a hybrid powertrain, too. While the specifics have yet to be revealed, a V-6 borrowed from the larger Pathfinder SUV is most likely. The hybrid is said to also use a V-6 engine, and we think it could come coupled to Nissan's e-Power series-hybrid that debuted in North America on the 2027 Rogue Hybrid. With that system, the combustion engine serves as a generator for an onboard battery, and the wheels are motivated exclusively by electricity.
